From Zanzibar to Italy:  A School Project That Inspires

After the engaging and detailed presentation about Zanzibar by Ornella—one of our dedicated followers who introduced us to a special educational project—we had the pleasure of meeting the very heart behind the initiative: 

Francesca De Micheli.

Francesca is the founder of the school project that caught our attention, and during our conversation, she generously shared the story, vision, and challenges behind this inspiring endeavor. Her passion and commitment were truly contagious. To help us to better understand the extent and spirit of the project, she also sent us a PDF presentation, which we are delighted to share with our community.

   Sister Island è un progetto a vocazione charity che nasce sull’isola di Zanzibar dagli sforzi di Francesca Micheli e Rossana Sareni. La ONG (regolarmente registrata a Zanzibar in Tanzania e parallelamente anche in Italia come ODV ETS) conta diversi soci, amici, volontari e sostenitori fra Italia, Svizzera e altri Paesi Europei.

Nata nel 2019 come un piccolo asilo con soli 30 bambini in una struttura in affitto, ad oggi Sister Island accoglie 355 bambini, suddivisi tra la scuola dell’infanzia e la scuola primaria, entrambe strutture costruite negli ultimi anni su terreni di proprietà, grazie al contributo dei molteplici sostenitori.

Dopo il ciclo della scuola dell’infanzia, i bambini proseguono nel percorso didattico della “primary” dai 6 ai 13 anni (dalla prima alla settima).

Sister Island garantisce a tutti i bambini merenda di frutta alla mattina e un pasto(porridge, zuppa di carote o cipolle, uova, in base al budget a disposizione), controlli medici, dentistici ed eventuali cure mediche,
divise e materiale scolastico.

L’approccio di Sister Island all’educazione si ispira al metodo Montessori: il bambino viene messo al centro del proprio percorso educativo e didattico con lo scopo di stimolarne l’autonomia.

Sister Island supporta la comunità di Zanzibar non solo attraverso progetti educativi ma anche tramite iniziative di concreto sviluppo socio-economico (orti sociali, allevamento di polli e galline ovaiole,
avviamento professionale di giovani donne alla sartoria, approvvigionamento idrico per la comunità con realizzazione di pozzi e vasche di contenimento, distribuzioni alimentari e di generi di prima necessità ai villaggi più poveri, donazione di due ambulanze a strutture sanitarie indicate dal governo, etc).
