Un’occasione per ricordare che ogni lingua è una porta aperta su un mondo nuovo: una storia, una cultura, una visione diversa della realtà.

In Europa convivono oltre 200 lingue, ufficiali e regionali, e impararne anche solo una in più significa allargare i propri orizzonti, creare legami e abbattere barriere.

Nel mondo se ne contano circa 7.000, un numero enorme se pensiamo a quante culture, storie e identità racchiude. Ogni lingua è molto più di uno strumento di comunicazione: è un modo diverso di vedere il mondo, di nominare le cose, di trasmettere emozioni e tradizioni.

Eppure, non tutte hanno lo stesso “peso”: mentre alcune come l’inglese, il cinese mandarino o lo spagnolo sono parlate da centinaia di milioni di persone, la maggior parte delle lingue del pianeta vive all’interno di piccole comunità, spesso con meno di 10.000 parlanti. Proprio per questo molte sono considerate a rischio: ogni due settimane, nel silenzio generale, una lingua scompare.

Difendere e valorizzare le lingue significa custodire il patrimonio culturale dell’umanità. È un invito a rispettare le diversità e, allo stesso tempo, a ricordarci che dietro ogni parola c’è una storia che merita di essere ascoltata.

Parlare più lingue non è solo utile per viaggiare, studiare o lavorare: è un modo per capire meglio gli altri e, allo stesso tempo, per riscoprire noi stessi.

La diversità linguistica è una ricchezza che unisce e ci ricorda che, pur venendo da Paesi diversi, condividiamo lo stesso desiderio di comunicare.

Oggi è il giorno giusto per salutare in un’altra lingua, imparare una parola nuova o semplicemente ascoltare la musica di idiomi diversi dal nostro. Perché ogni lingua è un piccolo universo da esplorare.

In Europe, more than 200 languages coexist, both official and regional, and learning even just one more means broadening your horizons, creating connections, and breaking down barriers.

Worldwide, there are about 7,000 languages—a staggering number if we think of how many cultures, histories, and identities they hold. Every language is far more than a communication tool: it is a different way of seeing the world, of naming things, of transmitting emotions and traditions.

And yet, not all languages carry the same “weight.” While some, like English, Mandarin Chinese, or Spanish, are spoken by hundreds of millions, most of the world’s languages exist within small communities, often with fewer than 10,000 speakers. That is why many are considered endangered: every two weeks, in silence, a language disappears.

Defending and valuing languages means safeguarding the cultural heritage of humanity. It is an invitation to respect diversity and, at the same time, to remember that behind every word there is a story worth listening to.

Speaking multiple languages is not only useful for traveling, studying, or working: it is a way to better understand others and, at the same time, to rediscover ourselves.

Linguistic diversity is a treasure that unites us and reminds us that, although we come from different countries, we all share the same desire to communicate.

Today is the right day to greet someone in another language, learn a new word, or simply listen to the music of idioms different from our own. Because every language is a small universe waiting to be explored.
